LILBURN - Police have identified an armed robbery suspect shot and killed in a shootout involving police at an after-hours bank in Lilburn Tuesday night.
Aubrey Orlando Tutwiler Jr., 23, of Lawrenceville, was killed when gunfire was exchanged with police after he and another suspect were fleeing the El Banco in Lilburn, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Sgt. Tyler Thomas, spokesman for the Lilburn Police Department, said the suspects were fleeing the bank after allegedly robbing it and encountered the officers, who arrived on the scene within two minutes in response to a silent hold-up alarm.
The suspects failed to surrender, and multiple shots were fired, Thomas said.
"It is believed that one officer fired the fatal shot with the deceased suspect. Two other officers exchanged gunfire with the second suspect as he fled the scene," Thomas said.
"We don't know if the second suspect was hurt in the incident," Thomas said. "We're not ruling it out or ruling it in at this point."
No bank employees or police officers were injured in the incident, Moloney said.
The Gwinnett County Police Department is the lead investigating agency on the shooting, and the FBI is investigating the robbery inside the bank, Thomas said.
Special Agent Stephen Emmett, spokesman for the FBI in Atlanta, confirmed that agents were involved in the investigation, but was unable to specify to what extent.
Moloney said an autopsy is scheduled for Tutwiler, who is originally from Cleveland, Miss.
Tutwiler's priors in Gwinnett include two arrests in 2006 for DUI, Moloney said.
The second suspect, described as a black man wearing a black skull cap, bandanna, jacket and pants, is considered armed and dangerous, and anyone with information leading to his arrest is asked to call the police.
