LILBURN - A shootout involving police and two armed robbery suspects at an after-hours bank Tuesday night resulted in the death of one of the suspects, and the other is still at large.
Sgt. Tyler Thomas, spokesman for the Lilburn Police Department, said police were dispatched at 7:37 p.m. to El Banco at 4271 Lawrenceville Highway N.W. in Lilburn. Thomas said officers were on the scene within two minutes and encountered the suspects fleeing the bank. "The suspects failed to surrender, and shots were fired," Thomas said. One of the suspects was killed in the shooting, and the other escaped, Thomas said. The Gwinnett County Police Department was called in to assist with the investigation, Thomas said. As of press time Tuesday night, Gwinnett County police and Lilburn police were conducting a search of the area to locate the other suspect. No police officers or bank employees were injured in the incident. Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the GCPD, said the officers chased the suspect on foot, and additional resources including K-9 units and a police helicopter were called to assist in the search. Moloney said the deceased is a black man, and the suspect at large is described as a black man wearing all black, including a black skull cap, bandanna, jacket and pants. He is considered armed and dangerous, Moloney said. Further details about the incident were unavailable Tuesday night, as it is still under investigation. It is not known if any money was taken, Moloney said. "A person lost their life today, but we're going to have to take this thing in stages," Moloney said. The FBI could get involved in the investigation, as the bank is FDIC insured, but Moloney said that is "still up in the air."More like this story
