Man charged with speeding, racing

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Lilburn man was arrested and charged with racing and speeding on Interstate 85

Sunday.

Marbin Gonzalez-Umanzor, 20, of 4936 Jacksons Mill Drive was arrested after an officer watched him and two other drivers speed southbound on

I-85.

According to a police report, an officer estimated the speed of the drivers ranging from 80 mph to more than 100 mph in a 55 mph zone, increasing their speeds to keep their vehicles near the same speed.

The officer was unable to stop the other two drivers.

Gonzalez-Umanzor was driving a gray two-door 2006 Honda Civic SI when stopped by police. He told police he was trying to keep up with his friends in the other two vehicles.

Gonzalez-Umanzor's car was impounded and he was taken to the Gwinnett County Jail.

Purse snatched in parking lot

NORCROSS - A 34-year-old woman was robbed Sunday while walking to her vehicle in the parking lot of the International Farmers Market at 5495 Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Norcross.

The victim told police two black men, about 18 to 25 years old, approached her and grabbed her purse.

The suspects fled in a black Ford Explorer, driving toward Oak Brook Parkway.

A witness told police he saw the vehicle drive through the parking lot multiple times before the incident occurred.

Man attempts to take DVD player

DACULA - A man attempted to rob Herbon Church in Dacula Saturday.

A woman working at the 202 Herbon Church Road church noticed a Hispanic man wearing a blue sweatshirt and blue jeans exiting the sanctuary of the church carrying a large item wrapped in a white

tablecloth.

The woman told police the man fled to a wooded area beside the church when she asked him what he was doing.

According to a police report, the woman chased the man but was unable to catch him.

Police found the stolen item, a DVD player, on the ground behind the church. They believe the man entered the church through the unlocked front doors.

Money stolen from home

STONE MOUNTAIN - Police are unsure who entered a Stone Mountain woman's home on Drummond Drive Saturday and stole nearly $1,000.

The woman told police she arrived home to find the back door kicked open and items inside out of place.

The victim told police the money stolen was in the dresser drawer located in the master bedroom.

According to a police report, officers found mud on the opened back door but were unable to obtain a footprint because of the smudged mud.

Clerk accused of aiding shoplifters

BETHLEHEM - Sheriff's deputies arrested a store clerk Nov. 14 for allegedly allowing customers to leave without paying for their merchandise.

Video cameras at the Dollar General Store at 14 Gifton Thomas Road reportedly caught an employee, Paula Mayweather, allowing customers to leave with shopping carts full of merchandise. At least three customers did not pay for their merchandise, and some gave Mayweather money on the side, reports stated.

The store manager estimated Mayweather had allegedly allowed customers to shoplift $2,547 worth of merchandise during her two weeks of employment.

Mayweather was charged with theft by taking.

Items taken from grocery store

WINDER - On Nov. 22, a white man with long hair allegedly shoplifted $220 worth of merchandise from the Ingles at 285 N. Broad St.

The store manager told a Winder Police officer the man had taken about eight packs of meat, eight to 24 packs of beer and other items, police reports said. The manager followed the man to a pay phone and questioned him about it. The man reportedly told the store manager he needed money to buy drugs.

The man was gone when police arrived at the store.

Traffic stop leads to five drug arrests

WINDER - Five men were arrested Nov. 11 for intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine following a traffic stop.

Sheriff's deputies stopped the driver of a 1985 gray Chevrolet Impala for failing to use a turn signal and for not wearing a seat belt. Deputies reportedly saw an open beer in the car. Two of the men took off running but were caught quickly.

Deputies found several bags of a green, leafy substance and a white, rocky substance in the car.

Donquarius Reddish was charged with obstruction of an officer. Cordeuro Riley, Marquize Jackson and Sheavonne Finch were charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana and obstruction of an officer. Sheavonne Finch was also charged with several traffic violations. Kelvin Finch was charged with open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana and obstruction of an officer.
