Thomas A. Harris, M.D., age 85, of Stone Mountain, GA, died November 22, 2006 at Emory University Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Odessa and Ernest Marvin Harris, his sister Marilyn Askew, and his son Jim Harris. Dr. Harris is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Marinel Smith Harris; daughters and sons-in-law Carole and Dan Mitchell, and Sue Ellen and Dan Brannan, all of Lilburn; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Holly Harris of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter-in-law Kathy Harris of Atlanta; grandchildren Jennifer Harris Gotch, Matt Harris, Jonathan Harris, Sara Kate Brannan, Laurel Harris, David Mitchell, Julie Mitchell, Mary Beth Brannan, Daniel Mitchell, Carol Ann Brannan; great granddaughter Piper Gotch; eight nieces and nephews in the Atlanta area, Connecticut, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and abroad. Born in Carroll County, GA, Tom moved at the age of four with family to Atlanta and grew up in West End. He graduated from Boys High School in 1939, and entered the accelerated college/medical school program at Emory University. He earned his tuition by carrying an Atlanta Constitution route every morning throughout West End, and he graduated from Emory University School of Medicine in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as Captain and served until 1948. He married his beloved Marinel on June 18, 1946, at Gordon Street Baptist Church, Atlanta. They made their home in southwest Atlanta and there raised four children. Dr. Harris began the practice of obstetrics-gynecology in 1951 and established a most successful practice, Atlanta OB-GYN Group, with offices in downtown Atlanta and Dekalb County. He delivered tens of thousands of babies and provided compassionate care to his patients, until his retirement in 1987. He was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics-Gynecology, and the American College of Surgeons, served on the clinical faculty of Emory Medical School at Grady Hospital, was a founding member of the Atlanta OB-GYN Society, and was a member of numerous medical organizations. After retirement, he engaged in successful commercial real estate endeavors, as he and Marinel welcomed children, grandchildren, family, and friends to their home and swimming pool in Smoke Rise, near Stone Mountain. He was a devoted member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church, where he was on the pastor search committee and taught Sunday School. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 25 at 11 a.m., at Smoke Rise Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Browning officiating. The Agape Sunday School class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
