STONE MOUNTAIN - A Friday night motor vehicle crash in Stone Mountain resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman, and another crash in Stone Mountain about two hours later resulted in two injuries.
Nicholas Thompson, 23, and Aaron Collins, 30, both of Gwinnett County, were killed in the crash that occurred around 10:55 p.m. Friday on Pounds Road, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Thompson, who was driving a 2000 Volkswagen, ran off the road and struck a tree while attempting to drive along a curve, Moloney said.
Thompson and Collins were pronounced dead at the scene, Moloney said.
Thompson was wearing his seat belt, but Collins, Thompson's female passenger, was not.
"Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in this fatality," Moloney wrote in a press release.
At around 1 a.m. Saturday, a man and woman were seriously injured in a similar single-vehicle crash.
Moloney said Ronnie Faint Jr., 35, and Cynthia Hetherington, 49, both of Gwinnett County, were injured when Faint ran a 2004 Ford Expedition off the road and hit a tree while trying to drive along a curve.
The crash occurred near intersection of Rockbridge and Brownlee Roads, Moloney said.
Faint was sent to Atlanta Medical Center, and Hetherington was sent to Gwinnett Medical Center, both in serious condition.
Neither of the two was wearing their seat belt, but both are expected to recover, Moloney said.
Investigators suspect alcohol was a contributing factor, Moloney said.
No further information about either crash was available at press time Saturday night.
