Woman hit by truck on Ga. 316

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Lawrenceville woman was killed Tuesday morning when she was hit by a man driving a tractor trailer.

Twenty-six-year-old Elena Vladmirovna Georgiadis was walking down the lanes of Ga. Highway 316 around 1 a.m., near the Riverside Parkway exit, when she was hit.

Lt. Jeff Smith, spokesman for the Lawrenceville Police Department, said officers are unsure why Georgiadis was in the travel lanes of the busy highway.

Smith said it was not believed that the woman had gotten out of a vehicle or was in an emergency situation.

"It's my understanding that she had recently been incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Jail and had been let out sometime that night, prior to the accident," he said.

Investigators believe Georgiadis was a citizen of Russia. Police said they have notified the Russian consulate in an effort to contact the family.

The man driving the 1993 Freightliner, belonging to Locos Transportation in Winder, has been identified as 23-year-old Lorenzo Sanchez of Denton, Texas. Police said no charges have been filed against Sanchez.

Police said the area of highway where the accident occurred is a location of limited access and it is unlawful for a pedestrian to be in the area.

The accident was cleared by 5 a.m. and police said and there were no serious traffic disruptions.

Police advise motorists not to walk in an area of high traffic like on Ga. 316. In an emergency situation motorists should stay off the roadway and wear bright reflective clothing, using a flashlight if possible.
