LILBURN - The Gwinnett Council of PTAs recognized exemplary school PTAs and their boards Thursday at an awards luncheon.
Nineteen schools were honored at the Council PTA Horizon Awards for efforts throughout the year. They were presented with certificates at the event held at the Blue Rooster Cafe in Lilburn.
"What it recognizes is just the people who go beyond the day-to-day responsibilities of the PTA," said Michelle Carter, co-president of the Gwinnett Council of PTAs. "It's kind of an extra special something for all of the people who do something extra."
To qualify for the Horizon awards, board members had to meet 11 criteria. Five of them were required, and the other six could be selected from a list. They included: achieving 100 percent membership or increasing over last year's membership, putting together a PTA scrapbook, participation in the annual Reflections program and sending representatives to Georgia PTA sponsored events.
Though PTA board members recognized that many boards were too busy to participate, they said the Horizons program was a great way to increase parent involvement in local schools.
"It encourages them to participate in all the things that PTA has to offer," Co-President Jennifer Cook said. "It just encourages them to get a lot of the stuff done, and it is a good re-cap of all PTA does."
Several prominent guests attended the event, including Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, Gwinnett Board of Education Chairman Robert McClure and Berney Kirkland, executive director to the superintendent.
"These people are working hard, and it's important to have them recognized," Wilbanks said.
