LAWRENCEVILLE - A suspicious box which turned out to be a hoax was far from funny for motorists stuck in traffic Tuesday morning when authorities shut down Ga. Highway 316.
A passerby called 911 at 8:22 a.m. Tuesday to report a wooden box about the size of a tool box was lying in the grassy median on Ga. 316 between Fence Road and Winder Highway. Officers found a homemade plywood box labeled with the words "HIV Do Not Open," said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Police responded by shutting down both east and westbound traffic for about an hour beginning shortly after 9 a.m. Traffic was diverted onto side streets.
The Gwinnett Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was dispatched to investigate the box, which was unsealed and opened on a hinge, Moloney said. Officers discovered its contents were merely a few cylinders of cement.
There were no leads in the case Tuesday, since no fingerprints or other evidence were able to be gathered from the box. Anyone who witnessed someone placing the box in the median is asked to call Gwinnett County Police Department at 770-513-5300.
