Recreation director resigns

WINDER - Barrow's recreation director resigned Thursday after being asked to leave by county officials.

Deputy Administrator Michael Fischer said Raiford Peacock's management style was not ideal for the Leisure Services department. Fischer asked Peacock to resign, he said, and Peacock turned in his resignation about 4 p.m. Thursday.

"I'm encouraged that Raiford saw that to resign would be good for the department," Fischer said. "It's been fairly smooth, very cordial."

Last summer, the county completed a recreation master plan that calls for an aquatics area, an equestrian space and a skate park in the next 10 years. Seven 100-acre community parks, 15 neighborhood parks, special-use facilities and a bicycle and pedestrian network were also suggested in the plan.

County commissioners acquired a swimming pool, clubhouse and small playground off Fifth Avenue in January. Fischer said the pool was still on schedule to open by Memorial Day weekend, and that Peacock's resignation should not affect the long-term master plan.

Three division managers will handle the department until a new director is hired, Fischer said.

Peacock, who led the department for about two years, could not be reached for comment.
