$15M deal reached on Ga. 120 widening

LAWRENCEVILLE - A heavy construction price tag won't mean another delay in the long-awaited widening of Ga. Highway 120 in Lawrenceville.

This week, the Georgia Department of Transportation signed off on a $15 million contract with Marietta company C.W. Matthews to widen Duluth Highway from Atkinson Road to Warren Morrow Road.

The tab is nearly twice the $8 million engineering estimate, but it was the lowest of three bids submitted for the work last month.

"They are getting their paperwork and all that stuff together," said DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope. "Construction should start this fall."

Only 2.59 miles long, the stretch is known to create a bottleneck between Discover Mills mall and downtown Lawrenceville.

The project, though, has been mired by delays over the past decade.

Most recently, the project hit a snag when the DOT failed to complete paperwork the Atlanta Regional Commission required to get into a regional transportation plan. Last year, Congress acted to allow the project back in the plan. Construction is expected to take two years.
