Man jailed after threats made to family

STATHAM - A 64-year-old Statham man is in custody after he reportedly threatened to kill his son and daughter-in-law and sealed himself in his home with a gun for two hours.

Donald Lee Thomas was charged with simple assault and terroristic threats following the incident.

Thomas' 20-year-old son called police shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, Statham Police Department spokesman Thomas Hinson said. The son told police Thomas had loaded a shotgun and threatened to kill his son and daughter-in-law after their infant woke him up.

Thomas locked himself in his bedroom, Hinson said, and refused to come to the door. Negotiators from the Barrow County Sheriff's Office talked Thomas out of his home just before midnight, Hinson said, and he was arrested without further incident.

Thomas was not armed at the time of his arrest, but did have a gun in the bedroom. He is now being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.

No one was injured in the incident.
