Grass fires erupt along interstate

DULUTH - Firefighters spent the Wednesday afternoon rush hour battling multiple grass fires that erupted along Interstate 85 South from Pleasant Hill Road to Beaver Ruin Road.

Georgia Department of Transportation workers were forced to divert traffic and close the right lane of I-85 South from Indian Trail Road to Jimmy Carter Boulevard beginning about 6:08 p.m. while the blaze was burning. The fires were brought under control at 6:30 p.m., said Thomas Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

Motorists were asked to slow down and watch for fire equipment on the roadway, and avoid the area if at all possible. The cause of the fires was undetermined at press time.
