LAWRENCEVILLE - Paperwork for the creation of the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District was turned in to the county Tuesday.
District backers, though, will continue trying to sign up a final few commercial property owners in coming days. "We can add properties a couple of times this week," said Chuck Warbington, executive director of the group behind the creation of the self-taxing district. Through Tuesday, 190 commercial property owners with almost 400 parcels of land had agreed to tax themselves, with the revenue going toward community improvements, such as security patrols and beautification projects. Under state law, the district will be able to force in another 199 property owners. The property taxes will generate a $1.3 million budget that will be used to hire about a dozen off-duty cops to patrol the area, to make traffic improvements and add landscaping, Warbington said. District backers hope to recruit St. Paul Travelers Insurance office, a Lowe's home improvement store and a Kraft manufacturing plant in coming days, Warbington said. The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners will vote on the district's creation next Tuesday. The district near Norcross recently dubbed Gwinnett Village would include Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Indian Trail-Lilburn Road, Buford Highway and Beaver Ruin Road. Residential property owners will not be taxed. Community improvement districts already exist along U.S. Highway 78 and in the Gwinnett Place area.More like this story
