Norcross boys ranked 23rd by USA Today
Fresh off their dominant performance in the state championship game on Friday night, the Norcross Blue Devils have cracked the USA Today Top 25 in boys basketball for the first time all year.
The Blue Devils, who won the Class AAAAA state title with an impressive 66-49 win over Beach, were ranked No. 23 in the most recent poll released by the publication.
Wheeler, which was ranked No. 7 in the country last week, dropped 18 spots after falling to Beach in the semifinals on Thursday.
The 29-4 Norcross team is ranked in the top 25 nationally in four other polls as well, with its highest ranking at No. 16 in Hoopsusa.com.
Collins Hill, Wesleyan pairs among locals in North-South game on Sunday
Two members of Collins Hill's Class AAAAA state title team and two Wesleyan standouts from the AA state championship squad were among the selections for Sunday's GACA North-South Basketball All-Star Classic in Savannah. The girls game is at 2 p.m. followed by the boys game at 4.
The North girls team features Collins Hill's Shantell Black and Brittany Cade as well as Wesleyan's Le Le LeSeur and Carolyn Whitney. Gwinnett had two players picked for the North boys team - South Gwinnett's Avery Jukes and Norcross' Jodie Meeks.
South baseball moves time for today's game
South Gwinnett's home varsity baseball game today vs. Milton has been pushed back to 6:30 p.m. to allow the visitors more travel time. The game was scheduled originally for 5:30 p.m.
Prep Rally features hoops title games
This week's Gwinnett Prep Rally includes highlights and interviews from the Wesleyan-Greater Atlanta Christian and South Gwinnett-Collins Hill girls and Norcross-Beach boys state championship basketball games.
Gwinnett Prep Rally airs each Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Comcast Channel 25 and each Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on Charter Cable 19. It also airs on GCPS each Thursday at 10:30 p.m. and Friday at 6 p.m.
North's Vashaw on Coaches Corner
North Gwinnett baseball coach Frank Vashaw is this week's guest on Coaches Corner, a locally produced high school sports TV show. The teams of the week are state basketball champions from Collins Hill, Wesleyan and Norcross and the Player of the Week is Collins Hill's Maya Moore. Other features include the Norcross crowd as Cheerleading Team of the Week and a Collins Hill 10-year-old team is the Team to Watch. The look-back section spotlights South Gwinnett vs. Tift County in boys basketball from the 2003-2004 season.
Coaches Corner airs at 7 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Charter Channel 19 and Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Thursday at 8:30 p.m. on Comcast Channel 25.
