LILBURN - A 20-year-old Lawrenceville man was killed Sunday after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing his car in Lilburn, according to police.
Joel Leyva Maldonado was driving a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Ronald Reagan Parkway between Lawrenceville Highway and Bethesda Church Road at 5:30 a.m. when his car apparently drifted off the road onto the right shoulder.
Police believe he awoke, jerked the steering wheel and lost control of the vehicle, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department. The Jeep rolled several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the eastbound lane, Moloney said.
Maldonado was the only person in the vehicle. He was wearing a seat belt.
Maldonado's body was being transported back to his homeland of Mexico for funeral arrangements, according to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.
