Braves to sponsor local blood drives

LAWRENCEVILLE - This weekend, the Atlanta Braves are striking out the summer blood shortage by working with the American Red Cross to host the Atlanta Braves All-American Blood Drive at malls and donor centers across metro Atlanta.

All blood and platelet drive participants will receive a vintage American Red Cross ball cap and a special buy-one-get-one-free ticket deal for an upcoming Braves game.

Participants may also register to win tickets to a Braves game, signed memorabilia or the grand prize: four tickets to a Braves game plus a batting practice field visit. Most healthy people age 17 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood and platelets.

In Gwinnett, drives will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday at the Gwinnett Place Mall in the lower level fountain area at 2100 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth and the Mall of Georgia's Mountain Court area at 3333 Buford Drive in Buford.

Donors can also go to 3090 Premiere Parkway, Suite 500, in Duluth from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Tuesday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Grocery store to hold opening

SUWANEE - The Fresh Market's grand opening in Suwanee will feature food samples, cooking demonstrations and entertainment through Sunday.

The festivities began Wednesday and include complimentary in-store cooking demonstrations with local professional chefs, food tastings, a live local jazz band and more.

Students attend Girls and Boys State program

LAWRENCEVILLE - Five North Gwinnett High School students represented their school at Georgia Girls and Boys State this month.

Steven Carter, Blake Edwards, Katie Doore, Debbie Funes and Sara Teems attended the program at Georgia Southern University. All five are seniors in the Air Force Junior ROTC.

Participants learn about the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of citizenship through the operation of city, county and state governments. It is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
