Students win

competition

LAWRENCEVILLE - Five Gwinnett Technical College students received national recognition for their knowledge and competence at the annual SkillsUSA competition this summer in Kansas City, Mo.

Of the five national winners from the college, two were gold medalists and three finished in the top 10 in their

categories.

Gwinnett Tech's gold medal winners are Jacqueline Hawthorne in photography and Shelley Hoster in preschool teaching. Darrell Bryant placed sixth in cabinetmaking; Dinh Huynh placed eighth in CNC milling and Randall Barnette placed 10th in carpentry.

More than 4,700 career and technical education students participated in the hands-on competitions in 84 different technical, trade and leadership fields. SkillsUSA, a worldwide student organization available to secondary and post-secondary students, sponsors the national championships annually to recognize the achievements of technical education students and to encourage them to strive for excellence in their chosen occupations.

To advance to the nationals, students had to first go through local and state-wide competitions. Gwinnett Tech students set a new college record for medals earned in the state SkillsUSA Contests held in May.

Car show coming in September

FLOWERY BRANCH - The city of Flowery Branch is hosting its third annual car show and chili cook-off this September.

To participate in the car show, call Steve Soucie at 678-409-9114 or Johnny Smith at 770-967-2604. Entry is $20.

There is no charge for chili contestants. To participate in the cook-off, or to be a vendor for a $25 fee, contact Charlotte Cornett at 678-698-1387.

There will also be a chili cook-off for people between the ages of eight and 15.

The car show and cook-off will be held in downtown Flowery Branch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23.
