A benefit concert Saturday in Duluth featuring hot R&B artist Tre will raise money for the Children's Restoration Network.
Tre will play two shows, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 4:30 p.m., at Gwinnett Place Mall's center court. The concerts will raise money for the Children's Restoration Network's 12th annual Back 2 School campaign, which provides new book bags and school supplies for area homeless children. A donation of a new book bag will get you into the concert. The group will start collecting the bags between 11 a.m. and noon Saturday, and the first 150 people to donate book bags can attend an autograph session with Tre after one of his concerts.
Children's Restoration Network is a local nonprofit group that helps meet the basic needs of homeless children in the greater Atlanta area. Gwinnett Place Mall is located at 2100 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. For more information, call 770-476-5160 or visit www.childrn.org.
Local co-ops seeking food donations
We recently got an e-mail from the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry letting us know that the co-op's food pantry shelves are bare. A scheduled delivery of a tractor-trailer full of food fell through recently, leaving the co-op with little food for the summer.
While food donations are generally strong around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the county's co-ops and food pantries typically suffer a dry spell in donations during the summer. It's a great time to clear out the pantries of surplus food or pick up a few extra items at the grocery store.
The Lawrenceville co-op is open to receive food between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as during its regular operating hours: 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. The co-op is located at 176 Church St. in Lawrenceville. For more information, call 770-339-7887 visit www.lawrencevilleco-op.org.
Bowling tournament will help disaster relief group
Golf and tennis charity tournaments are common occurrences, but here's a chance to throw strikes and spares for a good cause. A bowling tournament benefiting the Gwinnett Disaster Relief Team will run from 2 to 4 p.m. July 30 at the Brunswick Zone in Lilburn.
The Disaster Relief Team, made up of members of the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce, was created shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. The group works with the Gwinnett Emergency Management Agency to help prepare local businesses for what to do when a disaster strikes, as well as helps in recovery efforts locally and along the Gulf Coast.
The deadline to register for the bowling tournament is Tuesday. Brunswick Zone is located at 3835 Lawrenceville Highway in Lawrenceville. For more information, call 770-925-2000.
