LAWRENCEVILLE - Late-night drivers beware. The intersection of Ga. Highway 316 and Cedars Road will be closed from 8 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Monday for construction.
The closure was originally set to occur Thursday night but was moved to Sunday night because of scheduling issues. For the 10 hours the intersection is closed, construction crews will replace the concrete surface of Ga. 316 east.
A detour will be put into place, with traffic heading north on Cedars routed onto U.S. Highway 29. Southbound traffic will be able to access Ga. 316 east or west.
The plan is to pour all the concrete by 1 a.m., allowing five hours for it to dry before motorists begin to use the road again.
The entire project is set to be completed on Aug. 30 at a cost of more than $6.7 million. All of the concrete in the outside eastbound lane on Ga. 316 from Ga. Highway 20 to U.S. 29 will be replaced, as well as other sections of the road.
In addition, blasting on Interstate 85 is scheduled for
1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week, stopping traffic for about 10 minutes each time. The blasting is intended to move large quantities of granite on the southbound side of I-85 just north of Old Norcross Road.
Northbound traffic will be stopped at the Steve Reynolds Boulevard Exit, and southbound traffic will be stopped at Ga. 316. In addition, traffic on Old Norcross Road will be stopped.
Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope said blasting will continue into the early fall.
In addition, the inside lane of I-85 north will be closed from Pleasant Hill Road to Ga. 316 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The closure will allow for the construction of a new bridge over the interstate at Old Norcross Road.
