LAWRENCEVILLE - Traffic on Interstate 85 will be stopped for 10 minutes today at 9 a.m. to allow for blasting.
The blasting, originally scheduled for Friday, is intended to move large quantities of granite on the southbound side of I-85 just north of Old Norcross Road.
Northbound traffic will be stopped at the Steve Reynolds Boulevard exit and southbound traffic will be stopped at Ga. Highway 316. In addition, traffic on Old Norcross will be stopped.
Georgia Department of Transportation District Communications Officer Teri Pope said there have been at least eight blasts so far.
"It's gone very well so far," she said. "We've been able to move large amounts of material. But there is a lot of granite that needs to be removed from that hillside."
Blasting is also scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the coming week. Pope said it will continue through early fall.
In addition, the inside lane of I-85 north will be closed from Pleasant Hill Road to Ga. 316 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday to Wednesday this week to allow for construction of a new bridge over the interstate at Old Norcross Road.
The entire project, which will add new lanes and bridges to the intersection of Ga. 316 and I-85, is scheduled to be completed on Dec. 31, 2008 at a cost of more than $147 million.
