Longtime radio announcer Mark Blumen has missed the fun of play-by-play commentary since he started "Coaches Corner," a local high school sports TV show entering its eighth season.
So he found a way to get back to his roots.
Blumen's company, Play-By-Play Advertising, plans to show tape-delay broadcasts of Gwinnett high school football games each Tuesday and Wednesday night this year. The telecasts will be recorded using multiple cameras and operators each week, and each game will feature play-by-play and color commentary.
"I'm so excited and glad to have this opportunity to bring back high school football to the airwaves," Blumen said. "It's something we've needed for the past few years."
Gwinnett high school football broadcasts disappeared from the radio airways after the 2003 season when Lake 102.3, the former home of Gwinnett football, was sold and converted to Spanish-formatted La Raza. Prior to starting his own TV show, Blumen worked for WPLO and 102.3 as sports director and on-air personality for eight years.
Without a radio presence, Blumen thought a weekly TV broadcast of a Gwinnett game would fill a void. CSS broadcast high school games live in recent years, but its metro Atlanta focus meant those contests didn't always involve Gwinnett teams.
The recently released Play-By-Play schedule, subject to change, features several interesting rivalry matchups, including Parkview-Brookwood, South Gwinnett-Brookwood, Grayson-South and Buford-Greater Atlanta Christian. The goal was to get as many teams involved as possible while making sure the schedule featured the top games.
"(The schedule) will give the sponsors an opportunity to reach a lot more fans of high school sports," said Blumen, whose Coaches Corner show also will continue throughout the high school season. "The schedule will be second to none."
The broadcasts will air Tuesday nights on Comcast channel 25 from 8 to 10 p.m. and Wednesday nights on Charter channel 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.
