School janitor gets 8 years for child porn

ATLANTA - A former janitor for Gwinnett County Public Schools was sentenced to spend eight years in federal prison Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to charges of receiving child pornography.

David Jay Blackmon purchased photographs and videos of child pornography, making him "complicit in the sexual abuse of those children," said U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias in a prepared statement on Wednesday.

"This office will vigorously prosecute persons who participate in the child porn market to help protect children, the most vulnerable members of our society," Nahmias said.

Authorities said Blackmon subscribed to a child pornography site on the Internet. He was arrested when videocassettes of both male and female children engaged in sexual activity were delivered to his home on March 4, 2005. At the time, investigators also found more than 600 images of child pornography on Blackmon's computer.

The computer was also analyzed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which identified many of the children in the images as known victims of sexual abuse. The children ranged in age from infants to 12 years old, federal prosecutors said.

Blackmon was sentenced Wednesday to eight years and one month in prison and ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release.

Blackmon was a custodian at Grayson High School who had been employed with Gwinnett County Public Schools since 1986, said school system spokeswoman Sloan Roach. He resigned May 9, 2005, while school officials were in the midst of a human resources investigation of him, Roach said.
