Martha Clayton Clement, age 53, passed away Monday, July 10, 2006 after suffering a heart attack at her home in Snellville. She is survived by Gerald Clement, her husband of 29 years; her sons, Barry Clement of Atlanta and Andrew (Andy) Clement of Snellville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Vachel Pennebaker of Naples, FL, Judy and Harry Kilpatrick of Jackson, GA, Pam and Kip Rabem of Bremen, GA; and brother-in-law, Jeff Clement of Snellville. Born to David and Mary Clayton in Atlanta on Sept. 19, 1952, Martha attended Whitefoord Elementary School and graduated in 1970 from East Atlanta High School. Following a drug reaction at age three, Martha became deaf. Thanks to her father's advocacy, Martha became one of the first students in the Atlanta Public School System to receive individualized K-12 instruction from a speech teacher specifically for the hearing impaired, establishing the policy which would allow all hearing impaired students to receive equal education. After graduation, Martha joined the Georgia State Patrol where she became the second female license examiner in Georgia and was instrumental in establishing the TDD system to assist hearing impaired applicants in obtaining drivers' licenses. She retired from the Georgia State Patrol in 1996 as a Senior License Examiner after 26 years of service. During this time, Martha also served on the Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired and was instrumental in establishing the Police Explorers in Snellville. Martha and Gerald moved to Snellville in 1977 where Gerald opened his barbershop. Martha was an avid sports mom for the South Gwinnett Cross Country team when Barry participated in '96-99 and also for Grayson High School Rams when Andy participated in 2001-05. Martha has been a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church, the First Baptist Church of Snellville, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Snellville. Since retirement, Martha pursued her interest in genealogical research as a member of the Union County Historical Society, authoring articles for several genealogical publications and websites. Her most recent project was cataloging the cemeteries in Union County, Georgia. Since 1998, Martha has been a full-time volunteer with the McConnell Middle School Band in Grayson where she has left a legacy of love to hundreds of students. Martha's courage was inspirational; her gentle and compassionate spirit touched everyone she knew; her generosity extended to any in need; her love was accepting and unconditional; her deep faith was the foundation of her sweet spirit. She is beloved by the family and friends who are left behind. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at Tom Wages Funeral Home, 3705 Hwy. 78 West, Snellville, GA 30078 on Thursday, July 13th at 11 am.
