Rev. Donald Herndon, age 80, of Duluth, GA, died Sunday, July 9, 2006. Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of Duluth with Rev. Tony Griffin and Rev. Linda Evans officiating. Interment will be in East Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens, Lawrenceville. Rev. Herndon, a retired Methodist Minister, served several churches in the North Georgia Conference, eventually retiring from Trinity United Methodist Church, Duluth. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Air Force, and was a decorated veteran of World War II earning both a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. He was also part of an effort to free prison camps in Germany. Rev. Herndon was a member of the Retired Educators Association; the Sawyer-Herndon American Legion Post, Snellville; the Snellville Travel Club; the Old Timers Club, Ocee, GA; and was Gwinnett County Citizen of the Year in 1996. He also traveled, along with his brothers and sister, in the Herndon Brothers Quartet singing group. Survivors include: Wife, Katie Herndon, Duluth; Daughter, Teresa Pesacreta, Oakwood; Daughter and Son-in-law, La'Ne and Ray Mock, Lawrenceville; Son and Daughter-in-law, Barry and Leann Herndon, Hutchinson, KS; Sons, Donnie Herndon, Lithonia, GA, Charles Moulder, Atlanta, GA; Sisters, Betty Stone, Orangeburg, SC, Barbara Harrison, Doraville; Brothers, Alan Herndon, Snellville, Buck Herndon, Lilburn; Sisters-in-law, Wynette Conrad, Cumming, Linda Humphries, Suwanee, Barbara Waits, Dawsonville; 5 Grandchildren; 4 Great-Grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday from 2 until 8 PM at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Duluth Chapel, 770-476-2535.
