Group collecting book bags, school supplies for homeless kids

Picking out new book bags and school supplies are one of the most fun parts about heading back to school after summer break, but not every child gets that chance.

You can help make the transition back to school easier for local homeless children by donating new book bags and school supplies. Gwinnett Place Mall and the Mall of Georgia are collection sites for the Children's Restoration Network's 12th annual "Back 2 School" campaign. The group hopes to provide 3,600 homeless children in metro Atlanta with new book bags filled with school supplies.

Bags and supplies can be dropped off through July 31 at each mall's Guest Services booth. Gwinnett Place Mall is located at 2100 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth and Mall of Georgia is located at 3333 Buford Drive in Buford. Children's Restoration Network is a nonprofit group that supports children residing in shelters and group homes in 17 metro Atlanta counties. CVS grant helps cerebral palsy program

CVS Pharmacy recently donated $3,000 to the United Cerebral Palsy Afterschool Program through its community grant program.

The Lawrenceville program is a licensed, accredited nonprofit after-school and summer program serving about 20 Gwinnett County school-age children with cerebral palsy. The children have dual diagnoses and multiple physical and mental handicaps. The grant will help to make the program's playground wheelchair-accessible.

United Cerebral Palsy was selected to receive the grant through an application process with the CVS Pharmacy Charitable Trust, a private foundation that provides funding for health care, education and community involvement initiatives. Run will raise money for firefighters, families

A 5-Alarm 5K Run/Walk, benefiting local firefighters and their families, will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Tribble Mill Regional Park in Grayson.

The race proceeds benefit the Gwinnett Fire Employees' Benevolent Fund, a nonprofit group that helps Gwinnett Fire employees and their families in times of crisis. Registration is $15 before the race, and $20 at the race. Day-of registration runs from 7 to 8 a.m. at the park, 2125 Tribble Mill Parkway in Grayson.
