WINDER - Police say a 72-year-old man in Barrow County shot and injured a woman during a domestic dispute Friday then turned his gun on himself when police arrived at the scene.
About noon Friday the victim, 20-year-old Sherry Roberts, was stopped by a Statham police officer as she was driving recklessly through the town, Sgt. Thomas Hinson of the Statham Police Department said. She pulled into Frank and Son's Garage on Jefferson Road and told workers there she had been shot. Julia Autry, who works at the garage, said she called 911 and told the police who she thought shot Roberts - Julian Delgado, with whom Roberts had been living off-and-on. At 11:55 a.m. officers with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office arrived at the suspect's house at 1452 Hardigee Road. Chief Deputy Murray Kogod said Delgado shot and killed himself a half hour after officers arrived. Kogod was unable to specify what the relationship was between Delgado and Roberts or what the dispute was about. Autry said she had been friends with Delgado for several years and had spoken to him that morning. Roberts was transported to Athens Regional Hospital, where she is stable condition, Kogod said.
