Richard J. Pfeiffer, died July 2, 2006 of Alzheimer's disease. He was born to Joseph and Mary Them-Pfeiffer on October 1, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Detroit and graduated with honors. He worked as a copywriter in many advertising firms. On September 11, 1948, he was married to Betty Purcell. He was preceded in death by his wife; his brother, Ned; and his daughter, Kathryn Pfeiffer-Seeba. He is survived by a son, Joseph and daughter-in-law, Cyndi of Lawrenceville, GA; a son-in-law, James Seeba of Alpharetta, GA; and a son, Richard Jr. and daughter-in-law, Christina of Carlsbad, CA. He has 6 grandchildren whom he loved deeply. Before his illness he could discuss any topic. He was a kind man who was rich with praise for all who helped him. The family will have a visitation from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Thursday at Sandy Springs Chapel, 136 Mt. Vernon Hwy., Sandy Springs, GA and a Funeral Mass at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody on Friday at 10:30 a.m., burial will be immediately after at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. Leo North of Jackson, GA, age 85, passed away Monday, July 3, 2006 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. Leo was born July 13, 1920, to the late Ralph and Dorma North in Samson, AL. He served in the U.S. Army towards the end of World War II. He was a farmer for many years. He managed the Drew Citrus Grove in Island Grove, FL for 20 years prior to Alzheimer's disease. He and his late wife of 67 years, Inez, shared the gift of hospitality and always loved to have visitors in their home. Prior to living in the nursing home in Jackson, GA, he lived in Grayson, GA, Island Grove, FL, Donalsonville, GA and Colquitt, GA. He is preceded in death by his wife, Emily Inez North; daughter, Linda North Shumate; two brothers and two sisters. Leo is survived by his son, Jerry North and daughter-in-law, Betty North of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and former son-in-law, Jerry Shumate of Decatur, GA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Vonda North White, Sherri North Gloyd, David Alan North, Gregory Dean Shumate, Douglas Alan Shumate, Christopher Thomas Shumate, Tamera Shumate-Brown, Joy Christina Shumate and numerous nieces and nephews living around the United States. He is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren. A visitation of friends and family will be held from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., July 5, 2006 prior to the 2:00 p.m. service in the chapel of Byrd Funeral Home, 3409 W. Main St., Dothan, AL. Rev. Randy Greene, Good News United Methodist Church, Santa Rosa Beach, FL will officiate the service. Private interment will follow with Byrd Funeral Home directing. Frances Dowis Johnson Thomas, age 87 of Snellville, GA, passed away on July 3, 2006 after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her son, R. Dowis Johnson, and husbands, Robert L. Johnson, Snellville, GA; Daughter: Rachel Johnson Long, Gainesville, GA; Grandsons and Wives: Mike and Toni Johnson, Dawsonville, GA, Marty and Tobi Johnson, Winchester, KY, Rick and Becky Johnson, Charlotte, NC, Chris and Bonnie Johnson, Monroe, GA, Todd Porter, Gainesville, GA; Sister-in-law: Katherine J. Sanjiyan, San Carlos, CA; 10 Great Grandchildren; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 am, Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Grayson, GA, with Rev. J. B. Reese officiating.
