Just before his unit was to be shipped out for overseas duty in 1943, he received an honorable discharge for medical reasons. He then returned to Georgia residing in East Point where he and Grace raised David. David married his wife, Sherry, blessing John and Grace with their grandson, John Brandon. After 58 years of marriage, sadly Grace passed away in 1998. During John's working years, he was very successfully employed as a food broker for J. A. Campbell, distributors for various large food manufacturers such as Chicken of the Sea and Chiffon margarine. He retired in 1982 and moved into Plantation South in 2003.
