Three local athletes were among the nominees announced on Wednesday for the inaugural Atlanta Sports Awards, slated to be given Feb. 27 in a banquet at the Fox Theatre's Egyptian Ballroom. The Atlanta Sports Council and Applebee's created the event to honor athletic figures in the Atlanta area.
Brookwood senior football player Cameron Smith and former South Gwinnett star basketball player Louis Williams were among the three finalists announced for High School Athlete of the Year. The other athlete in the category was Stephenson football player Marcus Ball.
Brookwood grad Amanda Weir, an Olympic swimmer, is one of the three finalists for Amateur Athlete of the Year along with fencer Sada Jacobson and cross country runner John Tuttle.
Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley, the Atlanta Braves' John Smoltz and Andruw Jones and the Atlanta Falcons' Warrick Dunn and Arthur Blank also are up for the 10 individual awards.
