SUWANEE - A man from Colorado was killed Sunday morning when his tractor-trailer crashed on the side of Interstate 85.
Witnesses told investigators that the 2005 Blue Liner tractor-trailer was traveling north on I-85 when it veered off the right side of the roadway. It hit several items, including a drainage ditch and a tree. Then it caught on fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred just south of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in Suwanee. It was unclear why the trailer ran off the roadway. No other cars were involved.
"A lot of that is going to come from the medical examiner's findings," said Darren Moloney, spokesman for Gwinnett County Police. "I believe it will take quite some time."
Investigators with the Accident Investigation Unit are continuing to look into the cause of the motor vehicle fatality.
Moloney said the driver was approximately 50. While police know his identity, they have not yet found and notified his family in Colorado.
