NORCROSS - A public utilities crew struck a four-inch main with a backhoe Friday morning, leading to an apartment evacuation.
Firefighters responded to the call at 10:22 a.m. and closed Singleton Road from Tech Drive to Indian Trail Road while Atlanta Gas Light attempted to secure the leak, said Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman Thomas Rutledge. Officials later re-opened one lane on Singleton Road. Initially firefighters thought the Health Department nearby would have to be evacuated due to gas odor from wind drift conditions, but that proved unnecessary, Rutledge said. Firefighters monitored readings in the area until Atlanta Gas Light capped the leak at 5:24 p.m. A nearby apartment building was the only building evacuated, and no injuries were reported.More like this story
