HARTWELL - A man arrested after a domestic dispute pulled a concealed gun and shot himself in the stomach in the back of a Hart County Sheriff's patrol car, authorities said.
James White, 59, died of his wounds at the Hart County Hospital later Wednesday night, the sheriff's office said. Deputy Raliegh Durrett was called to White's home about 8 p.m. after several 911 calls from the home. Durrett patted White down before he placed him in the patrol car, Sheriff Mike Cleveland said. The sheriff said he didn't think White was handcuffed. As the deputy was getting out of the car at the sheriff's office he heard the small-caliber gun go off, Cleveland said. He said White was out on bond for misdemeanor charges of battery and cruelty to children stemming from an arrest on Christmas Day. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to look into the shooting.More like this story
