Gwinnett Toys 'R' Us stores survive cutbacks

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Toys "R" Us stores have been spared from the corporate chopping block.

The Wayne, N.J,. retailer recently announced it would close 87 locations based on a review and evaluation of all its U.S. stores during the past several months. Toys "R" Us spokeswoman Kathleen Waugh said the only Georgia store to close is in Macon.

The majority of stores will close this spring. Twelve of the 87 will be converted into Babies "R" Us. About 3,000 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closings.

Toys "R" Us has two Gwinnett locations: Pleasant Hill Road in the Gwinnett Place Mall district in Duluth and the Mall of Georgia area in Buford.

This is the second time Gwinnett Toys "R" Us stores escaped the axe. In 2002, the company closed 64 U.S. stores but spared Gwinnett.

The company's Kids "R" Us distribution center in Lawrenceville was shut down in 2003.
