LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County police released a photo of a stabbing victim Wednesday in hopes that someone who witnessed her altercation with an attacker will come forward.
Authorities said 33-year-old Elida Erma Moreno was well-known around the Saddle Brook Apartment complex off Singleton Road where she died shortly after midnight on New Year's Day.
Detective Gilberto Lorenzo canvassed the area this week and discovered many people had seen Moreno at neighborhood parties or at the pool last summer.
Moreno's boyfriend and sister both reside in the complex. However, a security guard is the only known witness to the fatal assault.
Lorenzo said other residents may not have heard Moreno's screams because firecrackers were being set off at the same time by New Years revelers.
There is still no motive or suspect, Lorenzo said.
The security guard reportedly saw a Hispanic woman later identified as Moreno, talking with a Hispanic man dressed in all black clothing near the leasing office at about 1 a.m.
The guard had just walked away to start patrolling the complex when he heard a woman scream, the report said.
He turned to see the Hispanic man running from the leasing office with Moreno chasing after him. The security guard said she collapsed in the street near the mailboxes.
When he stopped to assist her, Moreno reportedly told the security guard "she knew who stabbed her and she knew where he lived," but she never provided a name or address for the man.
Moreno died after being transported to Gwinnett Medical Center. She left behind a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son, according to her boyfriend of seven months, Fernando Tamyo.
A funeral for Moreno was held Wednesday evening at Tom Wages Funeral Home in Lawrenceville.
