Senate signs off on local visitors bureaus

ATLANTA - The cities of Buford and Suwanee would get visitors bureaus under local legislation passed unanimously by the Senate on Thursday.

The two bills, sponsored by Sen. Renee Unterman, R-Buford, would create an authority to operate each of the two bureaus.

The authorities would be run by five-member boards consisting of two elected officials and three business people, one of whom would have to be a hotel or motel operator within that city's borders.

Supporters say one of the purposes of the visitors bureaus would be to give representatives of the travel industry more say in local tourism promotion decisions.

The bills now move to the House.
