House OKs additional State

Court judge for Gwinnett

ATLANTA - Gwinnett County would get a sixth State Court judge under legislation unanimously passed by the House on Monday.

The sixth judgeship was the top priority among judges on the county's Superior, State and Magistrate Court benches. All three courts are grappling with a tremendous increase in caseloads in one of Georgia's fastest growing counties.

During the past decade, court filings in the State Court have more than doubled.

A recent study conducted by the Council of State Court Judges concluded that Gwinnett should have nine judges on the bench.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. John Heard, R-Lawrenceville, now goes to the Senate.
