7-year-old victim of sex attack

LAWRENCEVILLE - A 7-year-old girl was sexually assaulted at Collins Hill Park in the girls' public bathroom Friday afternoon by a young man.

The girl was at the park with her family and went to the bathroom, said Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

"It is believed the offender was watching from the outside of the bathroom, observed the victim enter and waited before he entered," Moloney said.

One witness saw the young man leaving the girl's bathroom and get into a white mini-van with a group of people before exiting the park, Moloney said.

The suspect was described as a white man, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build, in his late teens or early 20s, and wore a red shirt with black stripes, dark blue jeans with white tennis shoes and a black wristwatch.

The girl was transported directly to Gwinnett County Police headquarters to speak with investigators and was examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner. She did not require medical attention.

Police sketch artists were in the process of drawing the offender at press time.
