SNELLVILLE - Police believe speeding contributed to two separate fatal wrecks in the Snellville area in the past few days.
On Tuesday morning, investigators were still collecting evidence at the scene where a car ran off Dogwood Road at Blyth Lane at 9:43 p.m. Monday. The 2001 Ford Mustang was traveling westbound through the intersection when the driver lost control in a curve and veered off the road, striking several objects, said Officer Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The driver, 39-year-old Mark Campagna of Snellville, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where he died from his injuries.
"The contributing factors to this fatality were speed, wet roadways and alcohol," Moloney said.
Campagna was reportedly wearing a seat belt.
Gwinnett police are also continuing an investigation into a two-fatality accident that occurred Saturday on Johnson Drive between Spain Road and Campbell Road in Snellville. A 2005 Nissan Roadster was traveling south on Johnson Drive when the car failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road, slamming into a telephone poll, Moloney said.
The passenger, 40-year-old Dawn McPhail of Hot Springs, Ariz., was ejected from the vehicle and died. McPhail was not wearing a seat belt. The driver, Elijah Sun Dragon, 45, of Mableton, was wearing a seat belt. However, he was also pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately clear why Dragon lost control of the car, but speed was listed as a contributing factor in the wreck.
