Police: Officer's speed may have contributed to deadly accident

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police say a Gwinnett County police officer's driving speed may have contributed to a Friday car crash that killed a 52-year-old Snellville man.

Cpl. Darren Moloney, Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman, said further investigation indicates Officer J.A. Stoudenmire, 25, was not traveling in accordance with the posted speed limit.

The officer was driving a marked county police car when Willie Allen Sargent Jr.'s vehicle collided with Stoudenmire's car.

Sargent attempted to make a left turn on U.S. Highway 78 near Paxton Drive when his 1990 Plymouth Acclaim and Stoudenmire's vehicle collided.

Stoudenmire suffered minor injuries and required no medical attention. Sargent was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moloney said Stoudenmire has been employed by the county for nearly two years.

"He is not currently on leave but is taking scheduled vacation," Moloney said.

Moloney said investigations will continue to determine the exact cause of the accident.
