SNELLVILLE - A 27-year-old murder suspect was killed in a standoff with sheriff's deputies Tuesday afternoon after DeKalb County officials attempted to arrest him at his residence.
The deceased suspect, who was implicated in a Dec. 16 slaying, was shot and killed by members of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team in his garage about 3 p.m., where he was hiding in his car, said Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais.
An armored personnel carrier, similar to a tank, was used to break through the garage door, Bourbonnais said.
Once inside, the man pointed his handgun at SWAT members, she said.
"They were able to fire before he was able to fire," Bourbonnais said. "They opened fire and he was dead at the scene."
Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway said the carrier helped protect the SWAT members, because he believes they were walking into an ambush.
"Our hand was forced - we had to make entry," Conway said. "He raised up with a pistol, and they immediately took out the threat."
No one else was injured.
