LAWRENCEVILLE - Firefighters are unsure what caused a brush fire in a wooded area near Sugar Oak Lane Monday.
Lt. Thomas Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire department, said an estimated 12 to 15 acres were involved in the fire. The Georgia Forestry Commission was called to assist firefighters and cut a fire break to contain the fire. "Twenty firefighters were on scene and worked all the way around the fire to contain it," he said. Although Rutledge said the fire was fast moving due to the dry, dense forest, nearby businesses including an apartment complex and assisted living center were not in danger. "Winds were low and at no time were (nearby businesses) in immediate danger," he said. Two firefighters were evaluated for minor injuries sustained while fighting the blaze but were able to return to duty shortly after. Rutledge said the wooded area will most likely smoke during the night but firefighters have extinguished flames and contained the smoking to inside the fire break. He said firefighters would continue to check on the area throughout the night.More like this story
