Man killed in accident

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Snellville man was killed late Friday when his car collided with an on-duty police officer's vehicle.

The man, 52-year-old Willie Allen Sargent Jr., was trying to make a left turn on U.S. Highway 78 near Paxton Drive when his 1990 Plymouth Acclaim hit a marked police car, said Cpl. Darren Moloney, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Sargent was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer, whose name has not been released, suffered minor injuries and did not need medical attention, Moloney said. He was driving a marked 2002 Chevrolet Impala.

Moloney said at the time of the accident, about 11:58 p.m., the officer was driving east on U.S. 78 and was responding as backup to another call. He was obeying the posted 45-mph speed limit, Moloney said, and was not using his emergency lights or sirens.

The county's Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, and Moloney said there is no indication that either drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

Moloney said he did not know if the officer was placed on leave. Sargent, who was traveling westbound, is considered the at-fault driver for failing to yield during the left-hand turn.
