DJ to collect toys

in Duluth on Friday

DULUTH - B98.5FM's Kelly McCoy will be in Duluth on Friday.

The radio personality will be at the Toys R Us at 2205 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth collecting toys for a Toys for Tots drive from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Community center to open Friday

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for George Pierce Community Center and Prime Timers Pointe senior activity center Friday.

The ribbon-cutting will be at 2 p.m. and the grand opening celebration will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand for the grand opening and there will be a puppet show, magic show, crafts for young and old, train rides, face painting, temporary tattoos and free pizza and drinks while supplies last. Musical entertainment from a barbershop quartet and MusicLife will also be provided.

George Pierce Community Center will offer recreation classes and programs for all ages. Instructors will be demonstrating their classes during the Grand Opening event.

The 16,000-square-foot George Pierce Community Center is located at 55 Buford Highway in Suwanee at George Pierce Park. For more information call 770-822-8840.

Cancer society

gets donation

DULUTH - The Northeast Metro Association of Realtors presented "West Side of Gwinnett Story" in September and a check to the American Cancer Society in December.

The group gave $12,000 raised in a silent auction to the American Cancer Society in a ceremony Dec. 7.

Scouts collect pet food and supplies

DULUTH - Cub Scout Pack 575 and members of the Gwinnett Humane Society collected pet food, toys, cleaning supplies and towels at Discover Mills.

The items were donated to the Gwinnett Humane Society, then the Cub Scouts walked in a parade to welcome Santa to the mall.

Community theater presents plays

WINDER - Winder-Barrow Community Theatre's Children's PLAYhouse division presented two performances of their Family Christmas Celebration Dec. 2.

Each performance included a one-act play written and directed by Billie Nye-Muller and presented by children. After the play, all of the audience members were asked to join Santa's helpers in the craft area where they could make an ornament to take home, play games, eat refreshments, and have their picture taken with Santa. Toys collected at the door were donated to the Barrow County Family Connection.

The group will hold auditions for the play "Blithe Spirit" by Noel Coward.

Auditions will open at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 and 11 a.m. Dec. 30 at the Barrow County Leisure Services Center on Second Street.

"Blithe Spirit" will run March 15-18.#
