Annual chance to shop with cops Thursday

Underprivileged kids to get holiday gifts from police

LAWRENCEVILLE - More than 75 underprivileged children will have the opportunity to shop with a cop this Thursday.

The Shop with a Cop event, hosted by the Gwinnett County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 66, gives the children the opportunity to shop for their own Christmas gifts.

Children who participate in the annual event come recommended by DFCS, Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais wrote in an e-mail.

The youngsters will shop alongside law enforcement officers from the Gwinnett Sheriff's Department, Gwinnett Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies, the e-mail said.

"Each officer is paired with a child to shop for their Christmas toys and clothes," Bourbonnais wrote. "Every year it is hard to tell who has the most fun, the law enforcement officers or the children.

"This is a great event that allows the children to see officers in another light because often they only see a uniformed officer when there is trouble."

The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Collins Hill Road in Lawrenceville.
