Police look for third suspect in shooting

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police have arrested two suspects believed to be connected to the Wednesday night slaying of a 19-year-old man at a Lawrenceville apartment complex.

Kevin Fuquan Manns, 21, of Sandy Springs, and Charles Edward Lewis III, 21, of Lawrenceville are charged with felony murder in the shooting death of Jelani McCowan of Lawrenceville, said Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney.

Police are also seeking a third suspect believed to be involved in the shooting, Moloney said.

The additional suspect's name was not released Thursday, but investigators are working "some good leads," Moloney said.

Moloney could not specify if there was more than one shooter.

The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. inside a white four-door Mazda car parked in front of Building 2 at the Tanglewood Park Apartments, located at 5355 Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville, Moloney said.

The incident is believed to be the result of an illegal drug transaction, as handguns and evidence of a drug deal were recovered from the car, Moloney said.

Police also believe all parties involved were inside the car when the shooting took place, Moloney said.

"At this time we don't believe that any of the parties involved lived at the complex," Moloney said. "I don't know what the relation is. At this point, it's a little difficult to go into who was the buyer and who was the seller."

Manns and Lewis are being held in the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. Manns has no arrest history in Gwinnett, but Lewis has a previous arrest for misdemeanor simple battery.

Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said felony murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
