Police still looking for suspects in shooting death

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police are still searching for those responsible for the Nov. 18 shooting death of a Duluth teen.

Alejandro Ponce,17, was shot outside his home at the Gwinnett Crossing apartment complex in Duluth, said Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney.

Moloney said Ponce, his wife and his then 3-week-old child had just returned from the grocery store, and Ponce was unloading groceries from his vehicle when the shooting occurred, Moloney said.

Ponce was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville where he later died.

His wife and child were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting and were not injured.

Information about the suspect or suspects is limited at this point, Moloney said.

Witnesses place a Hispanic man at the scene who after the shooting got into the passenger side of the getaway vehicle, an older model white Chevrolet Suburban parked directly behind Ponce's vehicle, Moloney said.

"We don't know how many offenders are involved," Moloney said. "The best info that we have right now is the description of the white Suburban seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed."

The Suburban is described as having damage to the rear right bumper area and Spanish wording across the windows of both rear doors, Moloney said.

It also has an Atlanta Mexican radio station bumper sticker that reads "La Raza" on the left rear bumper and unknown white lettering across the front windshield, Moloney said.

The windows of the vehicle are poorly tinted.

Anyone who has seen this vehicle or has information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects is asked to call the police at 770-513-5300.
