Pedestrian hit by driver remains in critical condition

NORCROSS - A pedestrian hit by an SUV on Monday remains in critical condition at the Gwinnett Medical Center.

The woman, whose name has not been released by police, was struck as she was crossing South Norcross Tucker Road at an undesignated crosswalk area.

The driver of the car who struck the woman has been identified as Maria Castro, 31, of Norcross. Castro was driving a Mercedes ML430 at the time of accident.

Officer W. A. Newman, investigator with the Accident Investigation Unit of the Gwinnett County Police Department, said Castro turned out of the Publix shopping center and was traveling down the center turn lane waiting to merge into eastbound traffic when her car struck the woman.

"(Castro) said she did not see her crossing the roadway when she struck the woman," Newman said.

Castro was arrested on the scene for charges from outstanding warrants unrelated to the accident.

Newman said charges related to the accident are still pending.
