Berkmar's Mecheso, Collins Hill's Drouin runners of the week

Berkmar's Girma Mecheso and Collins Hill's Jackie Drouin were selected as runners of the week in voting by the county's cross country coaches.

Both runners won the top stage at this past weekend's two-mile Stage Races at Gainesville College. Mecheso won in 9 minutes, 47 seconds and Drouin's winning time was 12:11.

Parkview grad Marler waived by the Jaguars

Former Parkview kicker Seth Marler, who won the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top placekicker while at Tulane, was waived on Monday by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Marler started for the Jaguars as a rookie in 2003, connecting on 20 of 33 field-goal attempts. He has not kicked in an NFL game since. He was signed and released by the Atlanta Falcons before Jacksonville signed him on Aug. 11.

Duluth hosts Thursday pep rally

Duluth High School's football players, cheerleaders, band members and other school personnel will be the subject of a community pep rally on Thursday in Duluth Town Green.

The event begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, with cheers, introductions, music and refreshments on tap for the evening.

Wesleyan wins Green Division at Buford tourney

Wesleyan's fastpitch softball team won the Green Division of the Buford Invitational this past weekend. The Wolves defeated Jefferson 4-0 in the finals.

Georgia Force rolls to 79-0 win in Cartersville

The Georgia Force home-school football team won its first Georgia Football League game this past weekend, routing the NCA Lions 79-0 in Cartersville. The team led 31-0 after the first quarter and 59-0 at halftime.

Edward Jackson passed to Tim Gordon for the Force's first touchdown and Justin Reinsmith scored the second on a 45-yard run, starting things off quickly after the team took a 2-0 lead on a safety. Alex Higgins sacked the NCA quarterback for the safety. Caleb Hecox was 9-for-11 on PATs.

Grayson head coach Mickey Conn is this week's guest on Coaches Corner, a locally produced high school sports TV show.

Collins Hill's James Lewis is the show's player of the week, Collins Hill is cheerleading team of the week, Buford softball is the team of the week and the youth team of the week is the 9-year-old Norcross football squad.

Coaches Corner airs at 7 and 8 p.m. on Thursdays on Charter channel 19 and on Comcast channel 25 on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
