DORAVILLE - Police believe foul play was involved in the death of a young woman who was at first believed to be the victim of a car accident in the Doraville area.
Gwinnett County police Cpl. Darren Moloney said the department's Accident Investigation Unit was called out at 5:52 a.m. to the scene on Rufus Place off Weaver Way in the Liberty Heights community.
But the case was turned over to the homicide unit, when investigators realized the driver - the only occupant of the car - had experienced greater trauma "than what should have occurred in a motor vehicle collision of that type," Moloney said.
The victim was identified as Maria Guadalupe Villegas, 27. She lived off Jane Road, which is near the scene.
The vehicle, an older model four-door Buick, had apparently ran off the roadway and into a ditch.
The slaying is the 21st this year and the seventh in August, according to the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.
The violence has made local investigators busy, Moloney said.
Police had to rush from one scene to another, when a shooting occurred about three miles away from the homicide scene Thursday.
"They had to drop one emergency to handle another," Moloney said.
Moloney said the crimes are unrelated.
