•LAWRENCEVILLE - A 36-year-old Lawrenceville man was arrested last week after allegedly threatening his pregnant stepdaughter with a hammer.

When Mattison Scott Brown called his wife earlier in the day on Aug. 12, she could tell he had been drinking and told him not to come home. Around 10 p.m., Brown arrived at the house to discover he had been locked out. He reportedly used a hammer to break the glass in the front door and gain entry.

Wishing they weren't household names

Why do some stories capture the interest and attention of the public and others don't? You know what I mean. People disappear every day. Kids run away. There is murder and mayhem around every turn and we are absolutely oblivious to most of the malfeasance - and when we do pay attention, it is usually for a fleeting moment and then our thoughts drift back to our own humdrum existence.

G. Ed Caldwell, age 83, of Lawrenceville, passed away on August 15, 2006 at Embracing Hospice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett and Ora Caldwell of Cartersville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Owen and Martha Jo Caldwell of Sandy Springs and Don and Helen Caldwell of Marietta. After graduating from Cartersville High, he joined the US Navy in 1942. He saw action in the European invasions during World War II. Following discharge from military service, he attended Georgia Tech before beginning a long career in auto sales management with Taber Pontiac and McNamara Pontiac. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fay; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Wayne Bryant and Laurie and Mike Allison; grandchildren, Amy and Paul Cowan, Kate Bryant, Mandy Allison and Michael Allison. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2006, at 3 PM at Snellville United Methodist Church.
